ר׳ יום טוב בן אברהם אשבילי

ר׳ יום טוב בן אברהם אשבילי (approximately 1250–1330), known by the acronym Ritva, was one of medieval Spain’s foremost Talmud commentators. His family name indicates origins in Seville, but the best documentary evidence associates his mature career with Zaragoza, where an Aragonese record identifies him as a hakham and dayan by 1280. He studied in Barcelona under ר׳ שלמה בן אברהם אבן אדרת and ר׳ אהרן הלוי, absorbing the Catalan school descending from ר׳ משה בן נחמן. His novellae combine close explanation of the Talmud with comparison of Spanish and northern European traditions and became standard works of advanced study. He answered halakhic questions from across Spain and, after his teachers’ deaths, was regarded as a major communal authority. Additional works include Sefer HaZikaron, defending formulations of ר׳ משה בן מימון against criticisms by ר׳ משה בן נחמן, Hilkhot Berakhot and a Passover Haggadah commentary. Because many texts circulated under his name and manuscript attribution is complex, this record lists only well-established works.
