ר׳ יוסף דובער הלוי סולובייצ׳יק
ר׳ יוסף דובער הלוי סולובייצ׳יק (c.1820–1 May 1892), known as the בית הלוי, was a Lithuanian Talmudist, communal rabbi and the first major rabbinic leader of the Brisk branch of the Soloveitchik family. Born in Nesvizh to ר׳ יצחק זאב הלוי סולובייצ׳יק and Rivka, a descendant of ר׳ חיים מוולוז׳ין, he studied at Volozhin and taught in Minsk while still young. In 1854 he joined ר׳ נפתלי צבי יהודה ברלין in leading the Volozhin Yeshiva, where his dialectical, conceptual approach helped prepare the ground for the later Brisker method developed by his son ר׳ חיים הלוי סולובייצ׳יק. He became rabbi of Slutsk in 1865, established advanced study there and was remembered for organized assistance to poor children. Conflict with communal modernizers led him to resign and live in Warsaw under difficult financial circumstances. After ר׳ יהושע לייב דיסקין left Brisk, ר׳ יוסף דוב accepted that city’s rabbinate around 1878–1879 and served until his death. His responsa בית הלוי address all four sections of Shulchan Aruch and combine close textual analysis with practical communal judgment. בית הלוי על התורה preserves discourses on Genesis, part of Exodus and festival themes. His students included ר׳ יוסף רוזין and ר׳ זלמן סנדר שפירא; his son ר׳ חיים succeeded him in Brisk.
