ר׳ יוסף בן דוד חביבא

ר׳ יוסף בן דוד חביבא (approximately 1340–1420), known as the Nimukei Yosef, was one of the last major Spanish Rishonim. Very little secure biographical information survives. He studied in the intellectual world of Barcelona associated with ר׳ ניסים בן ראובן and ר׳ חסדאי קרשקש, and later evidence associates him with Zaragoza. His principal work, Nimukei Yosef, is a sustained commentary on the halakhot of ר׳ יצחק אלפסי. It carefully edits and transmits earlier Spanish talmudic traditions, especially those of ר׳ יום טוב בן אברהם אשבילי and ר׳ ניסים בן ראובן, while marking the author’s own interventions with the phrase “אמר המחבר.” The commentary probably once covered substantially more of the Rif than survives or was printed. Portions on Moed Katan and Makkot were long printed under the name of ר׳ ניסים בן ראובן, while manuscripts have enabled modern recovery of additional sections. Because documentation of his life is sparse, this record maps only the broad, defensible Barcelona-to-Zaragoza scholarly trajectory and does not invent rabbinic offices or travels.
