ר׳ יוסף יוזל הורביץ

ר׳ יוסף יוזל הורביץ (1847–1919), known as הסבא מנובהרדוק, was one of the most radical institution-builders of the Lithuanian mussar movement. Born in Plungė and educated in the Lithuanian rabbinic world, he married young and entered business in Švėkšna. An encounter in Memel with ר׳ ישראל סלנטר redirected his life toward disciplined ethical self-formation. He studied in Kovno with figures including ר׳ יצחק בלאזר, ר׳ נפתלי אמסטרדם and ר׳ אברהם שנקר, then pursued prolonged periods of solitude and introspection. Encouraged by ר׳ שמחה זיסל זיו to serve the public, he created kollelim and yeshivot across the Russian Empire. The central yeshiva opened at Navahrudak in the 1890s and generated the decentralized Novardok network. Its demanding pedagogy sought freedom from status, fear and social approval through bitachon, rigorous self-examination, communal study and deliberately discomfiting exercises. During the First World War he refused to abandon his students: the displaced movement regrouped in Homel and later expanded around Kyiv. He died there during the 1919 typhus epidemic after attending the sick. His teachings, recorded and edited by disciples as מדרגת האדם, made radical trust in God and the struggle against self-interest the enduring intellectual signature of Novardok. His remains were reinterred at Har HaMenuchot in Jerusalem in 1963; that posthumous event is not represented as a map movement, so the figure correctly disappears in 1919.
