ר׳ זלמן נחמיה גולדברג

ר׳ זלמן נחמיה גולדברג (1931–2020), widely called הגרז״ן, was a Jerusalem posek, dayan and teacher. Born in Minsk to ר׳ אברהם and Freidel Goldberg, he reached Mandatory Palestine with his family in 1935. He studied at Yeshivat Etz Chaim, Hebron Yeshiva and Ponevezh Yeshiva, and married Rachel, daughter of ר׳ שלמה זלמן אויערבאך. Goldberg served for decades in Israel's rabbinical-court system and became av bet din of the Rabbinical High Court. His decisions addressed marriage and divorce, conversion, monetary law, medicine, technology and the legal status of the Land of Israel. He headed the Sadigura kollel and taught at Jerusalem College of Technology, Yeshivat Torat Emet and other institutions, while examining thousands of candidates for rabbinic ordination. In 2008 he became editor-in-chief of the Talmudic Encyclopedia. His lectures and rulings were gathered in several volumes, notably לב המשפט and בנין אריאל. He died at Hadassah Ein Kerem in Jerusalem and was buried on the Mount of Olives.
