ר׳ זרחיה בן יצחק הלוי

ר׳ זרחיה בן יצחק הלוי (c.1115–c.1186), known as בעל המאור and by the acronym הרז״ה, was a major Provençal Rishon, Talmudist, halakhic critic and liturgical poet. Born into the distinguished Yitzhari family of Girona, he moved north while young and studied within the scholarly world of Narbonne and Lunel, including with ר׳ משה בן יוסף and ר׳ משולם בן יעקב מלוניל. In Lunel he taught a circle that included ר׳ שמואל אבן תיבון and mastered not only Talmud but Arabic literature, philosophy and astronomy. His ספר המאור is a sustained critical commentary on the הלכות of ר׳ יצחק אלפסי, divided into המאור הקטן on Moed, Berakhot and Hullin and המאור הגדול on Nashim and Nezikin. Its independence and insistence on reasoned analysis provoked forceful replies from ר׳ אברהם בן דוד מפושקיירא and later from ר׳ משה בן נחמן in מלחמות ה׳, while also ensuring its permanent place beside the Rif in standard Talmud editions. Other works include ספר הצבא on Talmudic methodology, דברי ריבות and numerous piyyutim. The chronology of his final years is uncertain; traditions place him again in Girona or in Lunel, and the map therefore treats 1186 as a conventional endpoint rather than a precisely documented death date.
